We’ve allowed for considerable belt-expansion of late, in order to bring you our picks of the top newcomers to the Brisbane food and drink scene, as well as places we think will make the hot list for 2017.
01 | Greenglass, Brisbane City
Call us optimistic, but we’re tagging Greenglass as our favourite new restaurant of 2017 – despite the fact that they haven’t even started to do dinner service yet. But with the show that they put on for lunch – with an unassuming entry that opens into a 2nd storey scandi/loft/warehouse space, a wine list that literally runs the length of the room, and smart, simple pairings from the kitchen – it’s already one of the most interesting places to dine in the CBD. 336 George St, Brisbane.
02 | Seymour’s Cocktails and Oysters, Petrie Terrace
Seymour’s is like Lefty’s older cousin – a little more refined and a touch more worldly, but will still lead you astray given the slightest opportunity. You’ll need to trust us on this one, but pull aside the heavy velvet curtains that double as the front door, order the groper ceviche with wasabi & roe along with a flute of Black Velvet (½ champagne, ½ Guinness), then sit back and let Seymour’s do its thing. 9 Caxton St, Paddington.
03 | Catchment Brewing Co, West End
Catchment is the sort of place we didn’t want to love – a dime-a-dozen microbrewery replacing the institution that was George’s Seafood (RIP massive octopus hanging in the window) – but one experience promptly put us in our place. A quick meal of the daily specials (fish pie and half a BBQ’d chook) was one of the most memorable of the past year. The quality fit-out, solid range of beers and variety of spots to perch doesn’t hurt, and a chef who knows their stuff sets it above. 150 Boundary St, West End.
04 | AETHER, Milton
Here we are again with another micro-brewery. In contrast to Catchment, at first glance Aether’s décor is spartan, the menu a little basic and its Railway Tce address decidedly unfashionable. But upon closer inspection the Aether crew have carved themselves an industrial niche that under promises and seriously over delivers. A chilled vibe and a cracking range of beers at decent prices make this the local you wish you had, and is all the better for its contrast with the corporate brewing behemoth that lives just around the corner. 35 Railway Terrace, Milton.
05 | New Brisbane Launches
Brisbane’s big name openings for 2017 look to be comprised largely of outposts of established brands from the southern states.
Messina is due to finally open his South Brisbane gelateria well over a year after it was first announced. The whispers of Adriano Zumbo’s first QLD store seem to finally be coming to fruition, and the Rockpool group (Neil Perry) are boarding the Brisvegas good ship, with plans for a couple of Burger Projects, a Spice Temple and a Rockpool Bar & Grill.
Of the lesser-knowns, there are two spots we’re particularly excited about: Charboys Burgers, the creators of Brisbane’s best burgers (in our humble opinion), are graduating from local market stall to a semi-permanent spot in the heart of the city; and a new edition of Spring Hill’s Happy Boy, who are (along with sister restaurant Greenglass, above) continuing to do their best to bring unique, wine-focused casual dining to the masses in the CBD.
