Stylist Kate Carnegie’s Painted Icons

Renowned fashion stylist and artist Kate Carnegie has recently returned from New York. She launches her ‘I♥KC’ pop up gallery in Melbourne on Thursday.

As well as styling for magazines like Instyle, Marie Claire and Oyster for the past five years, Carnegie has spent 12 months painting a portrait collection of pop culture icons and personalities like Stephen Fry, Jenny Kee, Grace Jones and Iris Apfel. She’s also launched a successful jewellery/accessories line, Un Deux.

The ‘I♥KC‘ pop up gallery in East Prahran will showcase Kate Carnegie’s original, large scale portraits of various personalities and characters in her unique style. Carnegie was classically trained at the prestigious Central Saint Martins in London where she undertook a BA in Fine Art, as well as a BA in Fashion Design from RMIT. We caught up with Kate this week as she excitedly finesses her gallery space ahead of the launch event on Thursday night.

What excites you most about being home?

Starting a new venture! I have been working on my paintings over the past year, so it has been really exciting to use my time in Melbourne to have my first exhibition and open my pop up gallery.

‘My subjects are people who inspire me for various reasons and that have an interesting face to paint.’

When do you feel most inspired to paint?

Usually at night. I am an night owl and seem to get my best work in then.

What are you most looking forward to at the launch on Thursday night?

To see all my hard work come into fruition. Also, to see how the artwork is perceived.

Now that you’re home, what do you miss being in New York?

I miss the craziness of it all. The spontaneous days that are never repetitive. It is a very exciting place and has such a special energy to it.

Tell us your latest style obsessions.

I’m still awaiting to get to Cuba. Its one place that I can not wait to get to, the colours, architecture, music and street scene. I feel like it will be a very inspiring place to see right now before it starts to shift.

‘I am pretty obsessed by Vetements at the moment.’

What’s next for you?

I’m working on commissions of Blondie and David Bowie for some clients. I’m excited to continue my creative ventures simultaneously back in NYC. I recently just launched a jewellery/accessories line, ‘Un Deux’ with a girlfriend. We have recently had a lot of press, including a few some editorials in Teen Vogue US.

I would love to have an exhibition when I get back to NYC,  and grow ‘Un Deux’ with my business partner, whilst styling in the mix !
