Countdown remains one of the most loved programs ever produced and broadcast by the ABC. Spanning 13 years from 1974-1987, the classic TV show provided the soundtrack to an entire generation of Australians and kick started the careers of some of the world’s most revered musicians.
ABC Music have just released a massive digital and 4CD collection with the biggest and most influential hits from the iconic original series including classic tracks from ABBA, Skyhooks, Iggy Pop, Hall & Oates, Cyndi Lauper, Cold Chisel, John Farnham, and heaps of others.
Returning to its original Countdown timeslot, Classic Countdown launched on Sunday and will continue with 13 one-hour episodes over the coming weeks on the ABC. Unashamedly nostalgic and playful, Classic Countdown will celebrate the explosion in youth culture and Aussie music that was the driving force of the show’s success. Actually I think we have to acknowledge the driving force that was Molly Meldrum here too, though he isn’t mentioned on the press release.
