Last Friday I took a field trip to the first of two RÜFÜS Melbourne shows at Festival Hall, as they continue on the Australian leg of their BLOOM World Tour.
The venue was full of madly excited revellers (shovers, not lovers), a stark contrast to the audience I was expecting, given the group’s ethereal paradiso sounds. Once on stage the band talked a few times about gladly being home in Australia, and thanking Melbourne for always showing them a good time (you’re welcome), though they also mentioned their recent set at Coachella (a triumph they deserve).
RÜFÜS delivered a winning combination of mesmerising lights, Jon’s soaring synth sounds, reliably smooth vocals from Tyrone, with almost every song peaking in a similar style – it’s fun to watch the audience response, hands in the air, bonded together – the disciples of dance. Of course it’s always hypnotic to watch an energetic drummer performing live during a dance set. Drummer James Hunt has said before that when the band approaches their live shows, they try to re-imagine songs and bring a new dimension and journey to the music. Listening to RÜFÜS always makes me want to run to paradise. Perhaps they’ll perform for us someday on a yacht cruise in Cabo San Lucas, far from the ramshackle old girl that is Festival Hall.
RÜFÜS is Tyrone Lindqvist, Jon George and James Hunt.
