Actor Ben Mendelsohn will arrive in Australia for the 2017 Sydney Film Festival in June, where he will attend the Australian premiere of his new film Una.
The celebrated actor will appear at post-film discussions on Friday 9 and Sat 10 June. Following the Sydney premiere, Mendelsohn will then travel to Melbourne for two In Conversation screenings on Sunday 11 June, first at the Astor Theatre, and then at Cinema Nova in Carlton.
Hailed as one of Australia’s most iconic actors, Ben Mendelsohn rose to prominence in the film The Year My Voice Broke. He also appeared in the popular drama Love My Way before his acclaimed role of Pope in David Michôd’s harrowing Animal Kingdom.
Mendelsohn’s latest film Una is a story about a young woman’s journey to reclaim her past. Based on Scottish playwright David Harrower’s much celebrated, Olivier Award-winning play Blackbird, the film stars Rooney Mara and Mendelsohn as protagonists Una and Ray. Fifteen years earlier, Una ran away with an older man (Ray), a crime for which he was arrested and imprisoned. When Una comes across a photo of Ray in a trade magazine, she tracks him down at his workplace looking for answers about their shared, abusive past. Her abrupt arrival threatens to destroy Ray’s new life and derail Una’s own stability. Unspoken secrets and buried memories start to surface as Una and Ray sift through the wreckage of their prior relationship, their confrontation raising unanswered questions and unresolved longings.
Tickets for the two Melbourne In Conversation sessions on 11 June are on sale now: 4pm at The Astor Theatre, Melbourne and 6pm at Cinema Nova, Carlton. Una’s Official Australian release date is June 22.
