The Unmanned is the next major exhibition announced for the Museum of Old and New Art in Hobart, Tasmania.
The Unmanned will be the culmination of one epic and the genesis of a second one, by French artists Fabien Giraud and Raphaël Siboni. The exhibition, which took over four years to develop, will be available to view at Mona in two parts:
Part 1 | 28 February to 18 June 2018
The finished first season of The Unmanned will be exhibited in one of Mona’s large galleries on the ground floor. This first season is comprised of eight films projected in large format, depicting a history of computation in reverse.
Part 2 | 20 June 2018 to 4 February 2019
Part 2 commences with the genesis of the second season of the project titled The Everted Capital, where the artists explore the history of value. It will begin at Mona with a twenty-four-hour performance which will be filmed, edited and broadcast live. This episode, filmed in the museum spaces, is set in the year 7231 and introduces visitors to a community living on a ‘dyson sphere’ while the sun (the ultimate capital) progressively becomes extinct.

Fabien Giraud and Raphaël Siboni’s work conveys a sense of wonder and horror at the human drive to remake the world in its own image.
“The Unmanned is a fascinating divergence in Mona’s ongoing interest in the drivers behind human creativity,” said Nicole Durling, Co-Director of Exhibitions and Collections.
The artists have examined the way humans have radically altered the world that they inhabit, with consequences that may be impossible to gauge. They ask – is it possible to assess a story in a way that is separate to the interests of the teller? Such questions are at the heart of their three-season epic, which the team at Mona is really looking forward to seeing unfold over the coming months.
