Our Pausefest 2018 Picks: Thursday 8 Feb

The line up for Pause Fest on Thursday promises to be, as one would expect, filled from wall to outdoor wall with innovators; notable people of interest who have held past mistakes as a marker for later success beyond their wildest dreams, and some who will show us new ways of pushing through the exhaustive lists contained within the daily lives of over achievers. We’ll learn how to not only survive the gusty waters of business in a tech, tech world, but how to do it with some semblance of panache.

Here are our top picks for Thursday at Pause Fest;

GROUP WORKSHOP: LET THAT SH*T GO

Dara Simkin, Play Consultant & Mindset Coach for Project Play leads this workshop that will help us find a way through feeling overwhelmed with what needs to happen next. Personally I’ve found it can be quite paralysing. You know that moment when you stare at your to-do list with a glazed expression, and then the words start swimming around and you don’t know how or where to start? This session is about activating the art of improvisation and “letting that sh*t go”. It’s about getting in to a decisive flow, but leaving room to adapt, adjust and respond in any situation.

Michael Sui from Airbnb will uncover a hidden history of creative luminaries across fashion, art, and architecture, building the foundation of today’s Inclusive Design movement.  Sui has grown his career by designing product and brand experiences at Google, YouTube, Airbnb, and retail experiences for Pottery Barn in San Francisco. Inclusive design can come in the form of a digital tool, a printed piece, or a design language system, and Sui’s expertise lays in finding solutions that embody empathy and respond to human behaviour.

BEYOND SIRI: HOW VOICE EXPERIENCE WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE

More than ever, Voice Experience (VX) is essential to the strategy and future development of brands. But, what does this mean for technology, for culture and for our everyday way of life? The age of asking is well and truly here. What I am most interested in hearing is what speakers Kath Blackham and Jeff Gibb think the long-term social impact of VX technology will be. Blackham has been in tech solutions for over 15 years and has championed local initiatives (Code Like a Girl), and been an Australian voice for digital around the globe (SoDA.) Recently she helped spearhead the creation of Australia’s first enterprise-level voice experience (VX) agency VERSA, with American digital consultancy, RAIN.

What does Voice Experience (VX) mean for technology, for culture and for our everyday way of life?

HOW TO GET MEANINGFUL THINGS DONE

Why are we still procrastinating?

Many of are able to work through all manner of senseless, unfulfilling tasks every day. Some of us may even have picked up the odd productivity book, too. But, how do we blast through to the important stuff? Why are we still procrastinating? During this talk Dr. Amantha Imber will share her evidence-based approach to reveal how our current behaviours are killing our ability to do meaningful work. Imber will offer a transformative approach for your daily grind, and hopefully ours, too. I think this means that we won’t be allowed to check social media while in session, either. Or Mashable. Just an inkling. Oh look, a cute cat video.

According to Gretta Van Riel, founder of SkinnyMe Tea, The 5th, DropBottle and Hey Influencers, even entrepreneurs with huge follower stats can make mistakes. Van Riel will help us avoid making the same ones with inspired, actionable steps and tools to launch a new business (or change tack on a current one). What is the best way for brands to harness the people power behind social media influencers? We’re really looking forward to this one, as influencers are a hot topic right now, and not always for the most positive of reasons. Van Riel will also share her insights on the future of online marketing and social media.
